Surgical Procedures
Osseous Surgery
Traditionally, gum disease is treated by eliminating the gum pockets. The gum tissue is moved away from the teeth, infected gum tissue removed, and uneven bone tissue re-contoured. The gums are then placed back with sutures and after a short healing time the gums will be healthy and tight around the teeth. The pockets will be eliminated and further bone loss can be avoided.
This is the traditional surgical treatment, and it works very well and predictably. Advances in conservative treatment and the advanced hygiene programs in your Dentists office frequently limit the amount of osseous surgery necessary. We are now doing many more sophisticated procedures that are focused on rebuilding lost bone (bonegrafting & regeneration), as well as plastic surgery (gum grafting & cosmetic surgery).
